Auburn, Ala.--Portland State University has been dropped from the 2002 Auburn football schedule because the Oregon school has not upgraded its program to Division I-A status as previously planned.

Athletic Director David Housel announced that the Tigers have replaced the Vikings with Louisiana-Monroe. Auburn was originally scheduled to play Portland State on Sept. 7th, but I-AA Western Carolina of the Southern Conference will move into that date on the AU schedule and Louisiana-Monroe will visit Jordan-Hare Stadium on Nov. 9th.

With an NCAA rule allowing a 12th game this year, Auburn has added a home-and-home series with Southern Cal and will open the 2002 season with an August 31 road game in Los Angeles vs. the Trojans. An NCAA rule allows colleges to play an extra game in years in which there are 14 Saturdays from the first permissible playing date through the last playing date in November.
